Objective: To learn about the Where Used icon.
Difficulty: Easy
In this article:
The Where Used feature compiles all occurrences of a specific component in an organized table. You can easily visualize how often the item is used and in which products and assemblies to better understand how important a singular component is to designs and production.
Overview
The Where Used icon is a handy tool to take advantage of in the Duro app that showcases all related parent-child relationships in a centralized table. Take a steel screw, for example. The Where Used feature tallies up all the other products and assemblies that utilize the screw, listing every occurrence and direct parent assembly within the table. This feature helps understand all related contexts across your Duro library for an individual component.
This feature provides visibility to ensure components are associated with all expected assemblies and products. It confirms that components are included where they’re needed and simplifies aggregating quantities for procurement.
How to Utilize the Feature
Please follow the directions listed below to view the Where Used assembly table.
- Login to your Duro account.
- Navigate to a component from either your dashboard or the component library.
- Click on the Where Used icon in the upper right toolbar.
The Where Used table contains the following information about the component in question: item type, CPN, name, thumbnail, quantity, revision, and status. Clicking on the linked CPN will take you directly to the assembly page where it is used.
Quantity
The Where Used Table shows the rolled-up quantity of all instances of an item used in its parent product, including those used within Top Level Assemblies (TLAs), Sub Assemblies, and other components. It is important to note that if an item is used both within a parent product and its TLAs or Sub Assemblies, the parent product quantity will encompass all instances of the item used (a) directly within the top level of the parent product and (b) indirectly through the TLAs or Sub Assemblies.
Example 1
In the image above, the component page for the Screw (CPN 438-00220) is displayed, and its Where Used Table is open. Observe that the row for the Carbon Sport 3000 (CPN 999-00190) is displayed in a lighter gray color, and the row beneath it, the Gimbal Axle Assembly (CPN 991-00328), is shown in black. This color variation simply differentiates products from components. Products are shown in a dark gray color, whereas components are shown in black.
Now, take note that the Screw (CPN 438-00220) is employed twice in the Gimbal Axle (CPN 991-00328) assembly, as indicated by the "2" in the quantity column at the bottom of the Where Used Table. Directly above this row, the Carbon Sport 3000 (CPN 999-00190) uses the Screw once and consequently is marked with a "1" in the quantity column. This means that the Screw is used a total of 3 times.
Example 2
In the image above, the component page for a Fabricated Plastic component (CPN 417-00258) is displayed, and its Where Used Table is open. The component is used 10 times overall in the T3450 Drone (CPN 999-00257), which includes both direct uses at the product level and indirect uses through the TLA (CPN 992-00162) and the Sub Assembly (CPN 991-00820) which are used in the assembly of the T3450 Drone.
Below is a breakdown of how the rolled-up quantity of the T3450 Drone is calculated:
- The Sub Assembly (CPN 991-00820) uses the component 2x.
- Total quantity = 2.
- The TLA (CPN 992-00162) uses the component directly 5x and uses the Sub Assembly (CPN 991-00820) 1x.
- Total quantity = 7 [2x in Sub Assembly (CPN 991-00820) + 5x in TLA (CPN 992-00162)].
- The T3450 Drone (CPN 999-00257) uses the component directly 3x and uses the TLA (CPN 992-00162) 1x.
- Total quantity = 10 [2x in Sub Assembly (CPN 991-00820) + 5x in TLA (CPN 992-00162) + 3x in T3450 Drone (CPN 999-00257)].
Note: The total quantity shown in the Where Used Table for the TLA is 5, rather than 7, because it does not roll up the two instances of the component contained indirectly within the Sub Assembly. Assembly quantities encompass direct uses only, and only parent products roll up the total quantity in the Where Used Table.
Pro Tips
The Where Used icon is also in the Products and Components Tables of Change Orders. In the above example, MCO-01322 is shown. This Change Order proposes modifications for a component with a CPN of 415-00511. Directly to the right of the hyperlinked CPN, observe the Where Used icon. Clicking on this reveals the Where Used Table for the component. Before approving a Change Order, make sure to leverage this feature to understand the impacts of the changes to the listed components.
